Nearly 600 kids unplug and connect at Onset Bay Center’s Summer Camps
“I caught my first fish!” On a fine August day, those words floated across the bay as OBC’s campers were fishing. For many, it was their very first time on the water—moments like these become core childhood memories and sow the seeds of environmental stewardship.
Fast forward to the final day of camp. Strong winds swept across the bay, making paddling impossible. But for two Bay Explorer groups, the challenge became an opportunity. With teamwork and imagination, they rafted their canoes together, rigged makeshift sails, and let the wind carry them across the bay. Harnessing the very element that had stopped their paddles, the campers turned it into a thrilling sailing adventure. From the beach to the pier, onlookers watched in awe as the young mariners transformed a windy obstacle into an unforgettable triumph.
That inventive spirit was a hallmark of the summer. Staff and counselors continually reimagined activities, from rafted sailing adventures to whimsical “Fun Friday” obstacle courses built out of pool noodles and repurposed camp gear.
When the season came to a close, the beach felt quieter, but the numbers told a powerful story:
-407 children participated in Bay Explorers Day Camp—nearly 50 campers per week, up from about 40 in past years.
-174 campers took part in Sailing Camp.
-The Waterfront Training Academy grew from 25 to 37 teens.
This steady 20% growth across programs since OBC’s opening in 2020 shows just how vital the Center has become to Wareham and the Buzzards Bay watershed. Many counselors themselves are success stories—once campers, later Waterfront Training Academy participants, now leaders guiding the next generation. Among them is Wareham native Diamond Staton, now attending UMass Dartmouth, who exemplifies the pipeline of opportunity OBC has built.
The Onset Bay Center has quickly become a cornerstone for families. Thanks to outreach in local schools and powerful word of mouth, more children than ever are experiencing the Bay.
Parents and guardians voiced their gratitude throughout the summer:
I just wanted to send a thank you for Fiona’s time at Buzzards Bay Coalition camp this summer. From day 1 she was hooked and so excited to go back the next day. We loved hearing about her adventures every day. We saw her build confidence on the water and around sea creatures, and she taught us lots of fun facts! You and your team work so hard and we so appreciate having this great program in our back yard. — Mary
Thank you so much for providing our community with what my kids call “best summer camp ever”. Elijah and Jeremiah are loving camp so much they are begging to go another week! — Falicia
Thanks again for putting on such a great experience for Ari and the other campers. Ari has always loved the beach and the water, but you and your team have enabled her to be so much more confident, comfortable, and knowledgeable about aquatics, marine life, and boating! It’s been amazing to see the growth in her, and I appreciate it immensely! — Frank
OBC’s commitment to inclusion is clear. This year, the scholarship fund was fully utilized providing access for 90 children across 150 camper weeks.
The scholarship program ensures that families from Onset, Wareham, and across the Buzzards Bay watershed can access the same enriching summer experiences. Households earning less than $60,000 qualify for full scholarships, while those earning between $60,000–$80,000 receive 75% support.
With another record-breaking season in the books, the Onset Bay Center continues to change lives—building confidence, fostering creativity, and connecting children to their coastal home.
Mark your calendars: Applications for next year’s camp open December 1.
