Watershed Bikers: Fort to Fort
This event happened in the past.Fairhaven, MA 02719
Join us for a casual, 16-mile ride from Fairhaven to New Bedford and back again with New Bedford bike blogger John Sullivan (aka A Midnight Rider) . Along the way, we’ll stop at Fort Phoenix and Fort Taber Park for brief historical talks.
This is a casual ride, mostly on bike paths and lanes with roughly 10 percent on quiet streets. We’ll gather at the Staples parking lot in Fairhaven (17 Plaza Way, Fairhaven) at 9:45 a.m. for a 10 a.m. start.
Setting out on the Phoenix Bike Trail toward the center of Fairhaven, we will pass some historic sites before crossing the New Bedford/Fairhaven bridge via the south sidewalk. The new ramp will take us off the bridge to the bike lane on Memorial Drive to the south end of New Bedford. The Joseph Saulnier Memorial Bike Trail will take us around the peninsula with brief stops at Fort Taber Park (to see the Fort Rodman and Fort Taber complex). The route will continue along East Beach and make the ascent to the elevated New Bedford Harbor Walk, taking us to the gates of the hurricane barrier. It’s then a short ride over the bridge again into Fairhaven and a visit to Fort Phoenix. A two-mile ride on the Phoenix Bike Path will return us to Staples, for a total of 15.7 easy scenic miles.
