South Coast Almanac, a regional magazine exploring the people and places of southeastern Massachusetts, hosts the third in its Walking Book Club series, which pairs books with a South Coast connection with an outdoor walk.

The group will meet at the Weweantic River to discuss Dartmouth author Holly FitzGerald’s memoir Ruthless River, a riveting account detailing her honeymoon gone awry. FitzGerald and her husband survive a plane crash and create a makeshift raft to make it to their next destination. After their raft is caught in a storm, they are trapped for weeks in the Amazon jungle without fresh water, food or shelter. The story is part adventure story, part love story. It is under development to become a movie.

Author Holly FitzGerald will kick off the Walking Book Club at Horseshoe Mill, a 34- acre property restored by the Buzzards Bay Coalition. South Coast Almanac writer Corey Nuffer will lead the approximately 1-mile walk, using Wareham’s Weweantic River as our local stand-in for Peru’s Madre de Dios.

The Ruthless River event is sponsored by Partners Village Store, the Friends of the Wareham Library, and the Wareham Library Foundation. Participants are encouraged to pre-register by email. The Walking Book Club is designed to accommodate both those who have already read the book and those who have not yet read it.
