Timberdoodle Time Woodcock Walk
This event happened in the past.Carver, MA 02330
Have you heard the whirr? Join the Friends of Myles Standish State Forest at a Saturday evening campfire and then observe the mating ritual of the the American woodcock.
At this time of year, these plump birds with the funky bill and eyes arrive from the south. The males display for the females by performing an elaborate circular flight display and plummeting to earth while making bizarre whirring sounds.
We will begin with a gathering at a campfire around 5:30pm at the amphitheater behind the forest headquarters building. A local bird guru will offer a quick introduction to the birds and their spectacular ritual. Then we will drive over to the fields on Cutter Field Road where we will listen and observe the flight display of the American Woodcock. No food will be provided, but feel free to bring your own. No dogs please. Kids old enough to stand quietly for a couple of minutes will love this!
