Join the Dartmouth Natural Resources Trust on Thursday, November 16 at 7 p.m. at the DNRT Center at Helfand Farm, where certified forester Phil Benjamin of Benjamin Forestry Services will give discuss the importance and value of forest management and give a brief presentation on the silviculture activities planned for Gidley Woods this winter.

Follow up Thursday’s talk with a walk in the woods with Phil on Saturday, November 18 at 9 a.m. to see how the woods have been marked for sustainable improvement thinning that will benefit both the forest itself as well as much of the wildlife in the area.

The Gidley Farm and associated woodland has been in the continuous ownership of a single family since the 1600s. The current woodlands have been under active forest management since the mid-1970s, resulting in the beautiful forest that continues to welcome visitors to the property. The forest is now ready for the next phase of management, which will focus on enhancing the health, productivity, and biological diversity of the woodlands. Management techniques include removing living trees to improve the growing conditions of other young, developing trees, as well as removing many trees that have died as a result of repeated insect defoliations.
