Join New Bedford-based artist John Middleton for a beach exploration, cleanup, and workshop, in which he’ll demonstrate how he uses debris found on local beaches to create one-of-a-kind art sculptures!

Search the shores of Gooseberry Island for the strange and interesting “shoreline objects” John uses to create unique pieces of art. A Coalition educator will serve as your guide to Gooseberry and its fascinating ecology and history, while John will help you find objects worn and transformed by the tides — all while picking up plastic and other trash to leave Gooseberry cleaner than we found it!

Then, we’ll move indoors to the Horseneck Point Life-Saving Station to take what you’ve found and create something unique and beautiful, with John’s guidance. The Coalition will provide paints and other materials needed to fasten your found objects together into art. Please feel free to bring along any additional materials you think would make for a unique sculpture!

Children ages 10+ are welcome. Wear clothes you don’t mind getting messy and bring your creativity!

Meet at the Gooseberry Island parking lot. We recommend bringing reusable bags to carry your treasures in and wearing sturdy walking shoes, as the walk around Gooseberry will be roughly two miles round-trip.
