Cuttyhunk Island Adventure

The Buzzards Bay Coalition’s Cuttyhunk Island School Program gives New Bedford Public Schools 4th grade students the opportunity to step off the mainland and into an unforgettable day of outdoor exploration, environmental learning, and island discovery.

This program gives students the opportunity to learn through hands-on outdoor exploration, build confidence and curiosity, experience coastal environments firsthand, and develop a connection to Buzzards Bay. Traveling by ferry across Buzzards Bay, students spend the day exploring the unique landscapes, habitats, history, and coastal ecosystems of Cuttyhunk Island through hands-on activities led by Buzzards Bay Coalition educators.

  • 10:00 AM: Arrival on Cuttyhunk Island, outdoor exploration activities throughout the day

Students Experience

Students investigate coastal habitats, watersheds, islands, shorelines, and native wildlife while observing the relationship between land and water.

Students search for shells and natural treasures, conduct salinity and water temperature testing, use compasses to locate surrounding areas, and participate in beach cleanups when time allows.

Using compasses and movement-based activities, students explore cardinal directions, navigation basics, wind direction, and orientation skills.

Students investigate topography, stormwater runoff, sources of pollution, water movement, and human impacts on coastal ecosystems.

Students discover the island’s glacial formation, Indigenous history, Bartholomew Gosnold’s exploration, fishing traditions, and World War II history.

Students explore the ocean as a resource through crabbing, wildlife observation, nature journaling, and watercolor painting inspired by the island landscape.
