"Back in the beginning of 2025, I was in a boat building club at Buzzards Bay Coalition. This club included lots of leadership, service, citizenship, scholarship, and character. The club Boat Building was for creating row boats for a summer camp at Buzzards Bay for the explorers to use. In this club, the plan was to make a rowboat by scratch with tools, wooden planks, math, and hard labor. To create one singular boat, it took weeks of working together. At the beginning of the club, basically everybody was shy because nobody knew anyone. The more weeks all of us spent together, the more we worked together and got to know each other.
I think I showed leadership in boat building because if things became challenging at some point, I didn’t give up. Anytime the instructor said he needed someone else's help to do something while the others were goofing off, I took responsibility and volunteered to help. If anyone made mistakes on the boat like drilling a hole somewhere that wasn’t needed or even painting the wrong spots, we always tried our best to fix it.
In this club, I think I showed great scholarship. One reason why I think this is because during this club, we had to use math while creating this rowboat. Some of the math questions had answers that came down to fractions, fractions that are outside my grade level. Another way I showed scholarship was by figuring out how to use new tools. Some of the tools we used included sanding blocks, hammers, drills, clamps, and even circular saws!
In boat building, I think I used citizenship. One way I showed citizenship in this club was because when one of my club members needed help at some point of the project, I helped them out until they fully understood. I showed service in boat building because all of my boat members and I built a row boat and expected nothing in return afterwards. Finally in boat building I showed character because I arrived at the boat building club on time ready to learn something new every day.
Participation in this club highlights all of these different characteristics. This was one of the funnest clubs I have ever been in."
