Why I Run: Coalition Staff

This year, the Buzzards Bay Coalition has not one, not two, but THREE staffers who will be in the Falmouth Road Race, fundraising for the Coalition.

Mary Doucette, Our Land Stewardship Manager

Doucette monitors 4,000 acres of Coalition-owned and -conservation-restricted property in the winter, and she maintains more than 20 miles of trails in the summer and fall. She is also trained as a wildland firefighter, certification for which involves walking for three miles with 45 pounds on her back in less than 45 minutes. That’s a pretty good foundation for training for her first Road Race, her first time running 7 miles. Doucette is keen on protecting the land: “This is my community,” she says. “It’s where I live, and I want to protect and maintain it as much as I can.”

Director of Monitoring Programs Tony Williams give the thumbs up after he installs a fish monitor at a local dam.

Tony Williams, Our Director of Monitoring Programs

Williams has been running his whole life. “After early mornings of Baywatcher water monitoring and working with volunteers, you’ll often find me running the back roads of Rochester after work,” he says. Running in the Falmouth Road Race and raising funds to support the many programs here at the Coalition is just another way he can contribute to keeping our Bay “clean and enjoyable for everyone.” He enjoys the camaraderie at the starting line. “There’s this incredible energy as the team gathers, knowing that we’re all running for the same cause,” he says. “Every dollar helps us continue our efforts to protect and restore the Bay. I also hope to inspire others to get involved, whether it’s through running, volunteering, or donating.”

Kate Reilly, Our Events Manager

Reilly spends her days managing our signature events. This year, she decided that she couldn’t let the 33 runners we recruited for the Falmouth Road Race have all the fun of running such an historic event. “I can’t do the Swim or the Ride as I have to be there, so if I were to participate in a Coalition event, it has to be the Run.” Reilly doesn’t consider herself a runner, but she has been training since March. “This was the perfect opportunity to do something outside of my comfort zone, and support a cause I truly believe in,” she says.
