25 years ago, a small but visionary group of local residents had a big idea: to swim 1.2 miles across outer New Bedford Harbor to raise awareness and funds for clean water. Now, the Swim is poised to celebrate its biggest year yet.

Skies were clear, sunny, and blue as a record 226 cyclists raised over $143,000 for clean water at the Buzzards Bay Watershed Ride on Sunday, October 1.

For the second year in a row, Will Saltonstall and several of his friends are cycling in the Watershed Ride as members of the team “Sail Bags,” a group of locals with a shared interest in sailing.

With 20 runners racing 7 miles on August 20, Team Buzzards Bay triumphed over the crowds and heat to raise an incredible $32,000 for clean water in Buzzards Bay.

Ann Parson of South Dartmouth is doing something a little different for her third Buzzards Bay Watershed Ride this October: raising awareness of the harmful effects of single-use plastics like straws, coffee pods, and grocery bags on our environment.

When Emma Keeler, 16, successfully biked 35 miles from Rochester to Woods Hole at last year’s Buzzards Bay Watershed Ride, she vowed she would return in 2017 – and this time, she promised to bring some friends along.
