25 years ago, a small but visionary group of local residents had a big idea: to swim 1.2 miles across outer New Bedford Harbor to raise awareness and funds for clean water. Now, the Swim is poised to celebrate its biggest year yet.

The U.S. EPA has issued long-awaited nitrogen pollution cleanup plans called Total Maximum Daily Loads (TMDLs) for four Buzzards Bay waterways in Falmouth: Quissett Harbor, Wild Harbor, and Rands Harbor/Fiddlers Cove.

The Coalition and the town of Wareham have received a $350,000 grant from the Seaport Economic Council to restore the historic Onset Bathhouse to serve as the headquarters for the Coalition’s developing Onset Bay Center.

Because they aren’t lined at the bottom, these lagoons leak as much as 50,000 gallons of contaminated wastewater every day. The town must fix these leaking sewage lagoons and comply with state law.

Wickets Island, part of the developing Onset Bay Center, will be a place where people of all ages can swim, fish, paddle, dig for quahogs, walk, and picnic with their friends and family.

When you stop to appreciate the view, remember that all of these ponds are somehow linked to Buzzards Bay: whether through streams, via groundwater, or simply as part of the web of life in our region.
