Land conservation is sometimes a big puzzle: Even small acquisitions give large swaths of land connectivity and put the larger picture into better focus.
Eleven acres in Acushnet were recently acquired to fill in some crucial areas to conserve on the Fairhaven/Acushnet town line. A nine-acre parcel connects the Mattapoisett River Reserve with the Town of Fairhaven Conservation Commission’s New Boston Road Conservation Area, which is managed by the Coalition. A two-acre parcel fills in a cut-out created by two separate Coalition properties.
Both parcels are entirely within State-designated Core Habitat (Forest Core and Wetland Core) and Critical Natural Landscape (Landscape Block and Wetland Core Buffer) areas, emphasizing the importance of protecting these parcels for species and habitat conservation purposes.
The properties were purchased from brothers Howard and Thomas Tucker, who inherited the land from their father.
