Wind
Recent proposals for wind electricity generating facilities in Buzzards Bay, Nantucket Sound and elsewhere off the coast of Massachusetts as well as on land in many Bay area communities have prompted a careful examination by The Coalition for Buzzards Bay of the benefits and potential impacts of this new potential use of Buzzards Bay and other nearby coastal waters.
Some of these proposals present an opportunity to boost significantly the amount of energy produced from renewable sources in New England. We believe that Buzzards Bay—its waters, shoreline and watershed—are a unique natural treasure. Declared an ‘Estuary of National Significance’ by Congress in 1985 and recognized under federal and state law as an ‘Ocean Sanctuary,’ the Bay should be protected from harmful private commercial development. The question posed by wind energy facilities is whether such development not only is acceptable, but desirable, when the development contributes to a reduction in the amount of pollutants reaching the environment and therefore results in an improvement in the health of the Bay ecosystem.
After careful consideration of the benefits of wind power to Buzzards Bay, and as explained in the position statement below, The Coalition for Buzzards Bay supports wind projects that are appropriately sited and mitigate potential environmental impacts.
