Reducing Discharges into the Bay

One of the largest sources of nitrogen and other pollution to the Bay is from the Bay’s five municipal wastewater treatment plant (WWTPP) discharges in Dartmouth, New Bedford, Fairhaven, Marion, and Wareham.

These sewage discharges are permitted by the U.S. EPA under the National Pollution Discharge Elimination System, and are typically reviewed every five years.  Baykeeper® Advocacy vigorously reviews the pollution standards in these permits in order to ensure that the strictest standards are applied to restore the health of the Bay.
