FALMOUTH
Action Falmouth is already taking and should continue in 2008 to protect and improve Bay health:
- Upgrade and successful management of advanced tertiary nitrogen removal technology at the West Falmouth wastewater treatment plant and implementation of the New Silver Beach wastewater improvement project.
- Investment in the Massachusetts Estuaries Project for West Falmouth Harbor.
- Enforcement of ’No–Build’ setbacks for freshwater and coastal wetlands.
- Participation in regional Oil Spill prevention efforts and in local spill response planning.
What Falmouth Can Do:
1. Reduce Nitrogen Pollution
- Appropriate funds to finance the Massachusetts Estuaries Project for Quissett Harbor, Megansett Harbor, Fiddlers Cove, Rands Canal, and Wild Harbor all of which are currently under contract. This information is vital to set restoration targets for these waters and effectively complete town-wide comprehensive wastewater management planning.
- Continue to explore townwide wastewater solutions that reduce nitrogen pollution to all of Falmouth’s coastal ponds while at the same time not increasing nitrogen loads to West Falmouth Harbor.
2. Protect River Herring
- Participate in regional investigations into external causes of river herring decline such as the offshore Atlantic Herring fishery.
