CARVER
Action Carver is already taking and should continue in 2008 to protect and improve Bay Health:
- Working in partnership with the Cape Cod Cranberry Growers Association, Cranberry Experiment Station and The Coalition for Buzzards Bay on a cooperative project to update ‘Best Management Practices’ guidelines for cranberry growers to reduce their fertilizer use and better protect local water quality.
- Passage of the Community Preservation Act was a major step forward for open space preservation in Carver. Congratulations!
- Enforcement of the town’s 65-foot ‘No-Build’ Wetland Setback provides important protection for wetlands and serves as a model for other watershed communities.
What Carver Can Do:
For inland watershed towns like Carver, the most important thing they can do for the Weweantic River and the Bay downstream is to protect forests, wetlands and stream buffers.
We encourage the town to prioritize wetlands and stream/riverfront lands when planning for open space acquisitions. The Coalition for Buzzards Bay is eager to work with the town in developing and financing land protection projects particularly on the Weweantic River and its tributaries.
