The Swim takes place the morning of Saturday, July 19, 2008 (rain date is August 2nd). The event is separated into two waves, the first for more accomplished swimmers and the second wave for swimmers who prefer to have a personal safety escort. From the moment you register to the Finish Line awards ceremony, you will be fully supported. With plenty of medical and safety personnel on hand, all you have to do is swim.

At the Start of the Swim in New Bedford, you can expect safety information, on-the-water support, plenty of water to keep you hydrated, and volunteers who are there to make sure your Swim is safe and that you are ready to go. We even time the event to coincide with the incoming tide to help you along and to further demonstrate that the Bay is your friend!
At the Finish Line in Fairhaven, you will be greeted with enthusiastic crowds, a medical tent, massage therapists, plenty of food, juice, coffee, bottled water, a chance to check in with other swimmers and some great reminders of your accomplishment. We’ll also provide transportation back to the Start if you need it.
Why Swim?
By participating in the Swim, you are making the statement that clean water and a healthy environment are important to you and your family. You are also helping to raise much needed funds to help protect Buzzards Bay. As this event is produced by the non-profit Coalition for Buzzards Bay, the money you raise will go directly toward our education, conservation, research and advocacy programs.
Who Swims?
For the past decade, hundreds of swimmers from ages 12 to 83 have proven that the Swim is for every age, ability, shape, size, and fitness level. The course through warm water draws serious competitors, first-timers, families, teams, and everyone in between. The 1.2-mile course takes between 20 and 70 minutes, depending on ability. Swimmers will have two hours to complete the Swim.
Fundraising
Your Swim is a great way to get your family, friends, and co-workers to help you Save Buzzards Bay. We ask that you raise a minimum of $150 (although some swimmers have been known to raise well over $1,000). Once you register, we’ll also tell you about some great incentives we have in store for our star fundraisers. And if you are at all worried about fundraising, we are here to support you with that as well. The staff at the Coalition has plenty of suggestions and helpful hints from the moment you register, on easily raising those critical funds.
