Coalition to Host Informational Event on Compensation Issues Related to Oil Spill

NEW BEDFORD, MA—The Coalition for Buzzards Bay is hosting an informational event on compensation issues related to the Bouchard-120 oil spill in Buzzards Bay at the New Bedford Public Library on Monday, June 16th from 7:00 to 8:30 pm. The discussion will focus on the types of oil spill-related injuries for which compensation may be sought, and the procedures that should be followed. Those who have been affected by the Bouchard-120 Buzzards Bay oil spill, including but not limited to fishermen, waterfront property owners and boat owners, will learn about the general guidelines for pursuing claims related to any injuries they have suffered as a result of the spill.

The featured speaker will be Dennis Nixon, Professor of Marine Affairs and Associate Dean for Academic Affairs of the College of the Environment and Life Sciences at the University of Rhode Island. Professor Nixon is a specialist in admiralty and coastal zone law, with substantial knowledge regarding the Oil Pollution Act of 1990 and its application to oil spills, including the 1996 North Cape spill in Rhode Island.

Also speaking will be representatives from the National Pollution Funds Center (NPFC). The Chief of the NPFC Division of Claims, as well as NPFC Legal Counsel, will discuss the NPFC and how it operates as an oil spill compensation safety-net.

The event is free and open to the general public.

Directions to the Public Library: 195- E or W, take Exit 15 for Rt. 18 S. Turn right on Elm Street and take an immediate left on N. Water Street. Go Right on Union Street for five blocks, then take a right on Pleasant Street. The Library is located at 613 Pleasant Street. On street parking available, as well as in the Elm Street Garage.
