Volunteers Needed to Help Monitor Bay Water Quality

NEW BEDFORD, MA—The Coalition for Buzzards Bay is looking for volunteers from Westport to Woods Hole to help monitor water quality around the Bay. Each year approximately 100 volunteers measure water quality at nearly 130 locations Baywide. A program of this magnitude is unique to the Buzzards Bay region and could not be accomplished without the dedication of citizen volunteers. Volunteers enjoy one morning a week at their specific sampling location on a nearby harbor or cove from May through September. The Coalition for Buzzards Bay provides training, support and all the equipment necessary for water monitoring. Volunteers have the opportunity to gain a new understanding of the Bay while enjoying the beauty of the Bay and providing critical data on the health of their coastal Bay Harbor. Anyone interested in volunteering or getting more information about the program should contact Tony Williams, Water Quality Monitoring Coordinator, at (508) 999-6363 ext. 203 or williams@savebuzzardsbay.org. Training sessions and equipment distribution will begin mid-May at locations all around the Bay. The data collected by volunteers is used to compile a Bay Health Index to give a snapshot of water quality and overall Bay health each year. Reliable and accurate data helps The Coalition for Buzzards Bay, State Agencies, Cities and Towns to make informed, scientifically-based decisions about the restoration and protection of Buzzards Bay. —###—
