NEW BEDFORD, MA—The Coalition for Buzzards Bay will hold its annual meeting on Tuesday, April 13, 2004 at the New Bedford Whaling Museum. The meeting is open to the public. A reception begins at 6:00 pm with cocktails and light refreshments followed by the Annual Meeting at 7:00 pm.
“The annual meeting is a time to reflect on the work The Coalition for Buzzards Bay has done over the past year and recognize outstanding stewards in the community who have gone out of their way to help protect our Bay,” said Mark Rasmussen, executive director for The Coalition for Buzzards Bay.
The meeting will include the presentation of Buzzards Bay Guardian Awards to Congressman Barney Frank, State Senator Mark Montigny, Fire Chief Timothy Francis, and Oiled Wildlife Rehabilitation Volunteers for their leadership role in the aftermath of the Bouchard-120 oil spill that occurred on April 27, 2003. The Buzzards Bay Guardian Award is the highest honor granted by The Coalition for Buzzards Bay.
Volunteer appreciation awards are also given to outstanding volunteers in our community. This year Coalition staff will recognize Fred Best of Mattapoisett and Tom Stetson of Woods Hole. “Fred and Tom are incredible volunteers, dedicating a lot of their time and energy to water monitoring along the Bay. I am honored to work with these two hard working individuals,” commented Tony Williams, water quality monitoring coordinator for The Coalition for Buzzards Bay.
The evening will wrap up with Keynote Speaker, Harriet Tregoning speaking on smart growth and sprawl. Ms. Tregoning is the Director of the Smart Growth Leadership Institute and former Cabinet Secretary for Smart Growth in Maryland. In her keynote address, Harriet Tregoning will share information about how our community can implement smart growth strategies and reduce the impact of land development on our environment. Smart growth can give us greater control over the pace and pattern of our communities’ growth. By planning, the region can benefit from more jobs, a broader tax base and a healthy economy without traffic congestion, the loss of farmland and open space, and crowded schools. Ms. Tregoning will share success stories about communities in Maryland and elsewhere.
The meeting is open to the public and is free to Coalition members and $3 for non-members. For more information visit: www.savebuzzardsbay.org or call The Coalition for Buzzards Bay at 508-999-6363.
Photo and video opportunities will be available.
