NEW BEDFORD, MA—The Coalition for Buzzards Bay will host a lecture on oil spill prevention on Thursday, March 25, 2004 at 7 pm at Tabor Academy in Marion.
Last year, the second largest oil spill in Buzzards Bay history occurred, spilling an estimated 98 thousand gallons of oil, affecting more than 90 miles of coastline, contaminating shellfish beds and impacting a variety of wildlife, especially migrating birds. The Cape Cod Canal and Buzzards Bay remain a major transportation route for boats and barges carrying oil throughout New England, leaving our region vulnerable to future and potentially much larger, spills. Scientists, volunteers and political leaders have worked around the clock to clean up the oil spill and study the short and long-term effects it will have on the region.
Biologist Ken Munney has been studying the impacts of the oil spill on wildlife and will talk about how birds and marine mammals have been affected. Scientist Chris Reddy from WHOI will share information about the legacy of Buzzards Bay oil spills, describing oil spills that have occurred in the past and how the Bay is recovering from each of them. Admiralty law professor Dennis Nixon from the University of Rhode Island will talk about the 1996 North Cape oil spill in Rhode Island and what lessons have been learned. Sue Reid will inform us about what is being done now in Buzzards Bay to prevent future oil spills.
This is the second of five lectures in this year’s Buzzards Bay Lecture Series. The Coalition for Buzzards Bay’s annual meeting and keynote address by Harriet Tregoning on Smart Growth will take place on April 13 at the New Bedford Whaling Museum, on April 20 at the New Bedford Public Library’s main branch there will be a benefits of wind energy presentation, and the series will conclude with author George Colt discussing his book The Big House: A Century in the Life of an American Summer Home on May 27, 2004 at the Millicent Library in Fairhaven.
All lectures are open to the public. Admission is $3 per lecture for non-members and free for members of The Coalition for Buzzards Bay. Refreshments will be served at all presentations.
