NEW BEDFORD, MA—Buzzards Bay has a long and rich history of recreational fishing. From days past, when anglers chummed for bass with lobster tails and trolled for blues from catboats, to the soft plastic lures and outboards of today, the Bay has challenged area sport fishermen.

While we all await the warmer weather to entice us back out onto the water, The Coalition for Buzzards Bay invites fishing enthusiasts of all ages to spend a winter’s afternoon listening to local experts talk about one of the best ways to enjoy Buzzards Bay. The event, “Fish Buzzards Bay,” will feature three lectures about the variety and splendor of fishing in the Bay, and what it has to offer as a valuable fishing resource. The event will be held on Saturday, March 8, from 1:00 – 4:00 p.m. at the Lyndon South Lecture Hall at Tabor Academy in Marion.

“Buzzards Bay is a great place to fish, and we'd like this event to underscore how important the Bay is to all of us,” said Tom Gidwitz, member of the Coalition’s Board of Directors and fishing enthusiast. “Our mission at the Coalition specifically includes the sustainable use and enjoyment of the Bay. And for many people, enjoying the Bay means an afternoon on the water with a rod, a reel, and some good friends.”

“Buzzards Bay, with all its estuaries, offers a spectrum of environments that attract a wide variety of fish,” said David Ross, scientist emeritus at WHOI and author of The Fisherman’s Ocean. Ross will speak at the event on “How to Catch More Fish Using Science.” Other speakers scheduled to present are: Loren Kellogg, staff ecologist for The Coalition for Buzzards Bay, who will speak about “Porgies, Eels, and Alewives: What Every Predator Should Know;” and Dave “Pops” Masch, biologist, teacher, cook, “On The Water” columnist, and author of Cooking the Catch, who will tell “Anecdotes of 45 Years of Fishing on Buzzards Bay.”

Admission is free to members of The Coalition for Buzzards Bay; $5 for non-members; and $3 for Senior or student non-members. Organic cotton tee-shirts featuring limited edition reprints of Bill Shattuck’s famous Striped Bass will be on sale. Light refreshments and snacks will be served. Please call The Coalition for Buzzards Bay, 508-999-6363, for directions and other information, or visit: www.savebuzzardsbay.org.
