In May 2005 the New Bedford City Council approved the demolition of the Fairhaven Mills building on Coggeshall Street near Interstate 195 to make way for a retail development called Gateway Centre. The proposed project seeks to redevelop the 15-acre site on the Acushnet River with the building of a Home Depot, another big-box retail store, and a restaurant.

The Coalition recently reviewed and commented on the developer’s Expanded Environmental Notification Form (or EERF), which outlines the potential environmental impacts of the project and the developer’s plans to mitigate them. At their August 30th meeting, the Dartmouth Board of Public Works (DPW) issued a “Notice to Proceed” on the Turn the Tide–Restore Dartmouth’s Estuaries project, a partnership between the Coalition, the Town of Dartmouth, the Lloyd Center for the Environment, and the University of Massachusetts School for Marine Science & Technology (SMAST) to restore the health and vitality of Dartmouth’s waters.

Annual Fund for the Bay 2005

November 1st marks the beginning of our most important annual fundraising appeal—the Annual Fund for the Bay. This year we are committed to raising $250,000—more than 25% of our entire budget—all in the span of two months.

The type of work we do can only be done with the generous support of individuals, families and businesses who agree that Buzzards Bay is worth saving. These funds allow the Coalition to remain:

    • vigilant and engaged in our advocacy,
    • consistent and committed to our research,
    • imaginative and innovative in our education, and
    • aggressive and far-sighted in our land conservation.

Please help make this Annual Fund for the Bay successful by making a gift. You can send your gift in the envelope you will receive from us in early November or you can make your donation on our secure website.

If you would like to make a gift of stock, please contact the Coalition's Development Director John Vasconcellos at 508-999-6363, ext. 202 or e-mail vasconcellos@savebuzzardsbay.org

Thank you for all that you do to help us Save Buzzards Bay
