Tug Escort and Other Oil Spill Prevention Rules Restored Legal advocacy by the Coalition played a key role in the appeal to reverse the U.S. District Court's decision that had invalidated the 2004 Massachusetts Oil Spill Prevention and Response Act. Although that appeal is being fought by the U.S. Justice Department and the oil shipping lobby, the Coalition's position was supported on August 21 when the Massachusetts DEP and Attorney General's Office announced that it would enforce the act during the appeal process. Enforcement of the act puts back into effect requirements for tugboat escorts, minimum watch and manning requirements, and required certificates of financial backing for all oil vessels. "This is a major victory for common-sense Bay protection," said Mark Rasmussen, Executive Director/Baykeeper for the Coalition. "Everyone who cares about Buzzards Bay can sleep easier with Tug Escorts and adequate crew requirements again being enforced on the Bay." |

Acushnet Sawmill Restoration
The New Bedford Harbor Trustee-led fish passage improvement project at the Coalition's Acushnet Sawmill property is well underway. The project is meant to help river herring pass over the existing dam on their migration up the Acushnet River to their historic spawning grounds at the New Bedford Reservoir on Lake Street in Acushnet. An existing fish ladder on the dam's edge has not functioned well leading to this long-planned improvement. Read more here

Meet the Coalition Events: Cuttyhunk & West Falmouth
The Coalition held two "Meet The Coalition" events earlier this month. Board members Seth Garfield and Brian Shortsleeve and their spouses, Dorothy and Judy (respectively) hosted more than 30 Cuttyhunk residents at the Garfield's home to talk about the Coalition's work and our impact on the waters off of Cuttyhunk.
Coalition Board President John Ross and his wife, Martha hosted a "Meet The Coalition" event at the Chapoquoit Yacht Club in West Falmouth. Attended by more than 80 local residents and CBB members, the gathering was a great opportunity to discuss the Coalition's efforts with particular regard to the clean-up of West Falmouth Harbor and CBB's advocacy efforts to prevent another oil spill in the Bay.
"Meet The Coalition" events are held throughout the summer season. Please contact John Vasconcellos at 508-999-6363 x202 if you or your organization would like to host a "Meet The Coalition" next summer.
