Bay Health Declining According to New State of the Bay Report

Score Falls Three Points in Four Years
Nitrogen Pollution Driving Decline

The health of Buzzards Bay is worse than it was four years ago according to the Coalition's new State of the Bay report, which documents the state of pollution, watershed health, and living resources in the Bay.

Buzzards Bay scored a 45 on a scale of 0 to 100. This is down 3 points from the 2003 score and reveals a Bay that's functioning at less than half of its ecological capacity.

Nitrogen pollution is a particular cause for concern, according to Coalition Executive Director Mark
Rasmussen. "The nitrogen pollution problem is expanding and getting away from us and is driving bay decline more than any other factor," he says.

We will be bringing the State of the Bay report to towns in the Buzzards Bay watershed in an effort to
increase public awareness and advocate for solutions
to nitrogen pollution and other problems impacting bay health.

Visit the State of the Bay section of our website to view individual scores and to learn more about the actions you can take today to help restore Buzzards Bay.

Woods Hole OfficeCoalition to Open
Woods Hole Office

Come July 9th, The Coalition for Buzzards Bay will have a new presence on the Cape Cod side of Buzzards Bay.

We are opening an office at 21 Luscombe Avenue in the heart of Woods Hole village and its scientific community.

The space is located adjacent to the dock for the Steamship Authority Ferry to Martha's Vineyard that receives hundreds - often thousands - of people on foot each day in the summertime. The Coalition will staff this office full-time during the summer and part-time in the off-season to educate and engage more people in the work of saving Buzzards Bay.

This location will:

ACCELERATE the restoration of the health of Buzzards Bay's harbors and coves in Bourne and Falmouth;

PROTECT Bay waters off Bourne and Falmouth from ecologically-harmful uses;

EXPAND CBB's Presence, Membership and awareness of Bay issues in Bourne & Falmouth;

INCREASE the level of financial support for CBB from Bourne & Falmouth; and
Enhance CBB's relationship and partnership with Woods Hole-based scientific organizations.

We welcome you to visit us in our new offices, which will be open seven days a week.  Call our New Bedford office at 508-999-6363 for hours.

Veteran Swimmers Reflect on Years of Taking the Plunge for the Bay

Dan Vaconcellos and Lyn MetivierFor longtime Swim Buzzards Bay swimmers Debbie Gabriel, Lyn Metivier, both of New Bedford, and Dan Vasconcellos, a New Bedford native now living in Pembroke, being a part of the Coalition's annual fundraiser has become a tradition so special, it keeps them coming back year after year to take the plunge. Together they've swam nearly 40 miles to help the Coalition bring attention to the fact that Buzzards Bay is a treasured resource and worth keeping clean and healthy.

Lyn and Dan have been participating since the 2nd Swim in 1995, Debbie got involved a year later in 1996.  Besides the 1999 Swim, which was rained out because of bad weather, the trio has never missed a Swim in more than a decade.  Each of the swimmers got involved in a slightly different way.  Dan first heard about the event through his sister-in-law, a then Coalition staff member who was instrumental in organizing the event in the early days. At the time he and his wife were swimming in triathlons. "I'd always liked swimming and I thought that participating in an event in Buzzards Bay would be a fun activity be a part of," Dan recalls...

Threat of Nitrogen Pollution Highlighted in Cape Cod Life Magazine

Brian ShortsleeveNitrogen is a natural and essential part of all marine ecosystems, but too much nitrogen adversely affects water quality and degrades habitat, impacting marine organisms including fish and shellfish.  This makes nitrogen pollution the greatest threat to the health of Buzzards Bay.

Cape Cod Life Magazine publisher and Coalition board member Brian Shortsleeve of Bourne highlights the Bay's nitrogen pollution problem and the work that the Coalition is doing to combat it in a column that appears in the July issue of the magazine.

Baywatcher Volunteers Still Needed for Summer Sampling

Each summer, from May to September, Coalition Baywatcher volunteers monitor the health of Buzzards Bay's harbors and coves.
With the help of our more than 130 dedicated volunteers, we are providing the information needed to make informed, scientifically-based decisions about the restoration and protection of Buzzards Bay.

We still have sites that are in need of water quality monitoring volunteers.
A strong science background is not necessary. A good Baywatcher is someone who can consistently commit one hour between 6:00 - 9:00 AM each week from May through September, follow instructions, and be agile enough to work on docks and piers along the waters edge.

Contact
Tony Williams, Director of Monitoring Programs if you are interested in helping to collect this valuable water quality data for the rest of the summer.
