Our advocacy efforts played a key role in thwarting a Commonwealth of Massachusetts proposal to open a dredge spoil disposal site off of the West Falmouth coast. Following our testimony on May 3, the Massachusetts Joint Committee on the Environment, Natural Resources, and Agriculture (JCENRA) voted to pass legislation that will permanently prohibit dredge dumping in all of Buzzards Bay and send it on to the House Committee on Steering and Policy where it is currently under review. For the bill to become law during this legislative session it will now have to be voted on favorably by both chambers of the legislature and signed by the Governor before July 31, 2006...Read more [here]
Boston developer Jay Cashman of Patriot Renewables LLC has proposed to construct a 90-120-turbine wind farm in Buzzards Bay at a cost of $750 million. The project would place 30 to 40, 407 foot windmills at each of three locations within the Bay—off Sconticut Neck in Fairhaven, Barneys Joy in Dartmouth, and Naushon Island, one of the Elizabeth Islands. Buzzards Bay has a history of pirates—Chase Road in Dartmouth was once named “Pirates Road” because of the rumor of buried pirate’s treasure along the route—so it was possible that I could find a treasure trove along the shores of the bay. It was a lovely spring Sunday morning. An ideal time to head out for an adventure with my wife, son, and two Siberian Huskies. Celebrate is our largest fundraiser of the year and a chance to commemorate the special things that Buzzards Bay offers us all. We’ll kick off the day’s festivities with the 13th Annual Swim Buzzards Bay at 8:30 am (swimmers must register by 6:00 pm on July 14th). The 1.2-mile swim across outer New Bedford Harbor is ideal for individuals of all ages and fitness levels. The festivities will continue into the evening at Celebrate Buzzards Bay held at New Bedford’s historic Fort Taber from 6:00-10:00 p.m. Sample some of the best food of the South Coast while you listen to the captivating sounds of the Atlantic Clarion Steel Band, a Celebrate favorite.
