State Advises Falmouth to Work with Coalition on Wastewater Management Plan
Secretary of the Executive Office of Energy and Environmental Affairs Ian Bowles issued a certificate last month on the Environmental Notification Form (ENF) submitted in December by the Town of Falmouth regarding the Comprehensive Wastewater Management Planning Project for the South Coast watershed areas. In it, he advised the Town of Falmouth to work with the Coalition to determine the impacts wastewater discharges will have on receiving waters in Buzzards Bay, and requested a plan for sewer service in the West Falmouth Harbor watershed.
"We are pleased that the Secretary directed the town to address our major concerns with this project proposal," said Coalition Advocacy Director Korrin Petersen. "To date, no analysis has been completed with regard to the impact effluent will have on the receiving waters. This is a central question that needs answering before the town proceeds..." Shipyard Farm Receives "Double Layer" of Protection
A new type of partnership between the Coalition and the Fairhaven-Acushnet Land Preservation Trust has resulted in "double-protection" of the coastal property on Sconticut Neck Road known as Shipyard Farm, which spans 53 acres of saltmarsh, hayfields and forested wetlands along Nasketucket Bay.
The property may be a familiar sight to many who visit or live on Sconticut Neck, as it is characterized by a large wooden sign and rustic stone wall that stretches along the roadside, just low enough to offer up a panoramic view of rolling meadows and coastal woodlands.
The land trust, which owns the land, donated a conservation restriction to the Coalition in support of funds awarded through the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service's North American Wetlands Conservation Act grant program. Funds awarded through this program are part of the criminal fine paid by the Bouchard Transportation Company for the April 27, 2003 Oil Spill in Buzzards Bay... Read more here

7 Environmental Organizations + 3 Workshops + 1 Location = Shrink Your Footprint
The Coalition, in collaboration with the Buttonwood Park Zoo, Dartmouth Natural Resources Trust, Lloyd Center for the Environment, Massachusetts Audubon Society, SEEAL, and Westport River Watershed Alliance, are hosting three workshops exploring how we all might save the planet (and Buzzards Bay) by shrinking our carbon footprints.
All workshops will be held on Saturdays from 10:00 AM to Noon at the Buttonwood Park Zoo in New Bedford. All workshops are free and open to the public.
Living Green (March 15) will demonstrate how easy and beneficial it is to "live green," from energy-saving opportunities to offsetting your footprint by a simple click of your mouse.
Driving Green (April 19) will highlight transportation alternatives and "green" driving habits to help you reduce emissions and conserve fuel.
The Growing Green workshop, held on February 16, kicked off the Shrink Your Footprint workshop series with a terrific start. More than 100 people filled the zoo's education room to hear local experts speak about ways to protect Massachusetts' coastal waters through environmentally-friendly landscaping practices, including xeriscaping, composting, and ecological wastewater management solutions. If you missed this excellent opportunity and want to learn the ins and outs of "growing green," click here to download some of the speakers' informative materials.
