Marsh Island Looking NW New Bedford Harbor Island Permanently Protected

Site to be Restored,
Made Publicly Accessible

The largest remaining stretch of undeveloped land in inner New Bedford Harbor is now permanently protected thanks to the efforts of The Coalition for Buzzards Bay and
The Fairhaven-Acushnet Land Preservation Trust (FALPT) and nearly half a million dollars in funding from The New Bedford Harbor Trustees Council (NBHTC).

The land deal protects the remaining 8 acres of land on the southern end of Marsh Island, a 22-acre peninsula that juts into New Bedford Harbor just south of Interstate 195 in Fairhaven...

Critical Bay Farmland, Bird Habitat Protected in Dartmouth

Oil Spill Penalty Funds Secured by Coalition-Led Partnership Enable Project's Successful Completion

More than 150 acres of farmland and important migratory bird habitat on Dike Creek, a tributary of Apponagansett Bay, are now permanently preserved thanks to more than six years of sustained effort by Dartmouth citizens and a federal grant secured by a Coalition-led partnership. The land conservation will assist in the long-term protection of water quality, shellfish, and wildlife in Apponagansett Bay.

The project was conceived by a group of Dartmouth residents who were concerned with the potential environmental impacts posed by an 81-lot subdivision. While the project was approved in the 1980s, the development was never completed due to financing difficulties and the property was later sold.  In 2001, Dartmouth citizens approached The Coalition for Buzzards Bay and The Trustees of Reservations for assistance with the project. The Trustees negotiated a purchase agreement with the landowner and together the two organizations mounted a fundraising campaign to protect the property...

Coalition Sponsors Golf Course Workshop

golf workshop flyerThe Coalition for Buzzards Bay is sponsoring an educational seminar for golf course superintendents on March 19 at the Bay Club in Mattapoisett.

The workshop, titled "Bay Friendly Golf Courses: How to Improve Your Turf and Save Buzzards Bay," will feature a distinguished lineup of speakers who will highlight the issues around the greatest threat to Buzzards Bay-nitrogen pollution-and how golf courses can implement best management practices for minimizing nitrogen fertilizer loss to surface and ground water.

If you are a golfer, encourage your Club's superintendent to participate.  Click here to download a flyer with details of the event.

2007 Lecture Series Flyer Lecture Series to Address Global Nitrogen Pollution Crisis

The nitrogen pollution degrading our harbors and coves is not unique to Buzzards Bay.  A recent survey by the United Nations Environment Programme found that the number of nitrogen-causing "dead zones" in oceans and bays around the world has doubled since 1990 to 146.

Join us for a series of lectures titled "The Global Nitrogen Pollution Crisis" which will explore the histories, commonalities, and lessons-to-be-learned from other bays around the world.

The series kicks off April 12 at Patron's Hall, Dartmouth Grange and will continue throughout the spring at locations across the Buzzards Bay watershed.

Free admission for Coalition members.
