ACTION ALERT

A Simple Letter is the Most Important Thing
You Can Do for Buzzards Bay this Spring

Oil SpillWe Need Your Help to Prevent
Oil Spills in Buzzards Bay

In just a few days, the 5th anniversary of the second largest oil spill in the history of Buzzards Bay will be upon us.  On April 27, 2003, a Bouchard barge spilled nearly 100,000 gallons of heavy fuel oil into the Bay and severely impacted coastal and marine species and habitats,

Contaminating 93 miles of shoreline
Killing more than 400 birds and thousands of fish
Closing thousands of acres of shellfish beds

The protection the Coalition has fought for to prevent future oil spills in the Bay remains unsecured, but pending in the Massachusetts legislature is a critical component of this protection.  Help us help the Bay by contacting the Chairman of House Ways and Means and ask him to pass S.2374, "An Act to Prevent Oil Spills in Buzzards Bay."

S.2374 provides Buzzards Bay with the protection it deserves by insuring every oil barge navigating through the Bay receives a Tugboat Escort and a Massachusetts State Pilot.

The Senate passed this legislation in November 2007 and it now awaits a vote in the House.  The Coalition encourages you to contact Chairman DeLeo in House Ways and Means right away and urge him to pass S.2374.  The Coalition is extremely fortunate to have you to help us.  Your voices have been essential on issues in the past and we ask that you take action once more to pass a piece of legislation which will secure much-needed protections for our beloved Bay.

Dead CormorantWe have provided you with a suggested letter (letters are more effective than e-mails).  Simply print this letter, sign it, and print your name and address to reflect your location close to the Bay - or feel free to craft your own letter.  Send letters to:
