Spend winter vacation discovering the outdoors with your kids at Winter Vacation Family Explorations, a series of three free outings in greater New Bedford on Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday of winter vacation week. Through fun games and hands-on activities, your whole family will learn about animals, plants, and habitats in the Buzzards Bay region in winter.

These programs are recommended for families with elementary school-aged children. We encourage you to attend all three programs, but it’s not required.

  • Sandy Surprises (12/28): Using guide cards, you and your family will explore the beach at Fort Taber Park and collect shells, learning about the different species that can be found on Buzzards Bay’s beaches. Then we’ll use the shells to create beach art in the sand.
  • Marsh Madness (12/29): Discover the animals and plants that rely on salt marshes and look for critters on the squishy terrain in partnership with DNRT at the Knowles Reserve. Using guide cards, we’ll explore the marsh and play games learn about bird migration. We’ll even create artwork in the marsh mud! (Meet at trailhead on West Smith Neck Road; parking available at Apponagansett Park)
  • Forest Finds (12/30): Learn how to identify different trees based on only their twigs, and use a magnifying glass to explore the forest floor and the critters underneath our feet at Flora B. Peirce Nature Trail. These decomposers work hard all winter to create the best soil for plants to grow in spring!

This program is supported in part by a grant from the New Bedford Cultural Council, a local agency which is supported by the Massachusetts Cultural Council, a state agency.
