The overall research objective of The Coalition for Buzzards Bay is to better understand the Buzzards Bay ecosystem and its response to human-related impacts in order to guide restoration and protection.
Our main research focus has been and remains to be on nutrient pollution of Buzzards Bay, specifically excessive build-up of nutrients, such as nitrogen and phosphorus, from human activity in the harbors and coves of Buzzards Bay. Although these nutrients are essential and naturally-occurring in the marine environment, too much nitrogen or phosphorus can cause an overgrowth of algae leading to low oxygen conditions and water quality decline.
The Coalition recently initiated additional monitoring projects aimed at providing a better understanding of ecological changes in the Bay and its watershed. Guided by recommendations provided by the Coalition’s Research Committee, these long-term initiatives, which focus on monitoring stream flow, river herring, and salt marshes, will gather important new data while expanding the Coalition’s commitment to engaging volunteers who are interested in learning about and protecting the Bay.
Contact Tony Williams, Director of Monitoring Programs at 508-999-6363, ext. 203, if you are interested in volunteering for any of our monitoring programs.
